How to Calibrate Your HDTV

So you decided to get rid of the old TV an buy yourself a new HDTV. The first thing you need to figure out is what kind: a Plasma TV or an LCD TV. After you do this, you take your new HDTV home but you notice that something has change. The picture doesn't look as good as in the store and that's because you're new TV comes with default settings that are tuned by the factory to display a good picture quality in conditions that are found in your local electronics store. Needless to say, that you aren't happy abut this and you want to get the most out of your HDTV. So questions start to pop in your mind:" What can I do? What are my options?". This is what we are going to talk in this guide.

Google help

This is the easiest way for you to calibrate your HDTV. You just make a search on Google following this syntax: "brand model-code calibration settings". You just replace brand and model code with the ones of your model and hope that somebody made the calibration settings before you and posted them online. This is the first method you need to try because is simple and doesn't require too much time and no money.

Do it yourself

If the Google way didn't help then the first thing that crosses your mind is to take matter into your own hands and calibrate it yourself. For this you will need a good video source: you can use a DVD with a DVD player that nowadays is common in most houses. The video source needs to have black scenes, white scenes (strong light) and scenes with shadows. Disable all artificial enhancements like Noise Reduction, Edge Enhancement, etc. and start tweaking controls like color temperature, brightness, contrast, sharpness and color/saturation control. IF you done all this and you are happy with the outcome then good for you but if you don't like the result then you should think of spending some money.

Using a calibration stick

This method costs a little but is the one I recommend the most. This requires a visit to the electronics store and buying a HDTV calibration stick. With a simple step by step calibration wizard and a little concentration you will obtain a very good overall picture quality. It's not expensive, you don't have to be a tech guru and the outcome of this method will be very good. That's way this method is the most recommended one.

Ask for professional help

This method requires you to spend more money (around 300$) but without a doubt, no one can make a better calibration then a professional technician. If you can afford it and you don't mind spending some cash then this is how you can get the best out of your HDTV.
