The Samsung FPT5084 50 in Plasma HDTV is capable of creating a display that is a true (1080p) high definition picture. The widescreen TV is Samsung's first venture into the 1080 hd market. Typically, plasmas have had issues displaying dark blacks. However, this television does a pretty decent job. In my opinion, the FP-T5084 is definitely on par or better than many of the plasmas being sold today.

Although the picture quality is pretty good right out of the box, some adjustment was needed to achieve the best possible picture. Luckily, the Samsung FPT5084 provides plenty of picture controls that are user friendly. Once adjusted, the Samsung delivers a bright and colorful picture. The HDTV is able to manage a broad color range equally well.

The Samsung FPT5084 HDTV is sleek and visually pleasing. Samsung has placed the speakers (hidden) to the side of the 50 inch screen, as opposed to the bottom. This makes the panel shorter and wider, which, in turn, makes it easier on the eyes. The sides of the TV also consist of chrome colored strips, which curve towards the outside of the TV and conceal the hidden speakers. The top and bottom frame of the Samsung FPT5084 is thin for a plasma of 50 inches. The bottom panel includes Samsung's logo and blue light. However, this particular feature can be turned off.

The Samsung FTP5084 Plasma is a quality television that is recommended to someone who is looking for an affordable 1080p HD set. Samsung has done a lot of things right, even if it is not perfect. I would like to see a screen that better reduces glare and better processing of non-hd programming, but these are in no way a deal breaker.

Hopefully Samsung will address these issues with their next set. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the performance of the Samsung FPT5084 and believe that it is a great buy.

Do PlayStation 3 Owners Really Need to Buy a HDTV?

Recently TV’s have got wider and thinner and some would even say… ‘sexier’, but have they got any better?

Sure, the latest trend is HDTV (High Definition TeleVision), promising stunning picture quality, but at a much higher price than regular CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Televisions.

Buzz words like plasma, rear projection and LCD will roll off the salesman’s tongue as you walk into your local electrical store, before being asked to choose from a variety of screen sizes, shapes and brands. It's enough to make you give up before you even start looking!

So Do I need a HDTV for my PS3 ?

PlayStation 3 comes with a cable that will let you use a regular television, so you don’t ‘need’ one, but be prepared to be very disappointed with the picture quality.

The PS3 isn’t cheap, whereas the PS2 is, so just be sure you are happy that you will hardly be able to see any difference between the games on either system on an old fashioned TV.

The biggest problem for those people who were among the first to buy a HDTV was that there was almost nothing to watch on it that showed off the very high detail levels that can be produced by these TV’s. Normal television channels can look even worse on a high definition television because they emphasize every tiny imperfection. Digital TV looks better, but again can look terrible when you are watching fast moving or very detailed scenes. Ideally, you will need to subscribe to a range of dedicated high definition channels.

So it all sounds negative at this point, and until the launch of the Sony PS3, it was.

Now things are different. All of the PS3 games are high definition, pushing your HDTV to produce amazing details, sharp images and a range of colours not even possible on your home computer monitor.

A recent PS3 firmware update now upscales regular DVD’s and makes them look amazing when played on a HDTV.

The PlayStation3 has a BluRay player built into it. Blu Ray movies are now coming down in price, and there is now a huge selection of movies to choose from; all recorded in high definition. Personally I would recommend that you rent Blu-Ray for now, until their price falls a little more.

The PS3 also allows you to surf the internet, which is a completely new experience on a 32 inch screen sitting in on a comfy chair. Many HDTV will allow you to split the screen, allowing others to watch TV while you surf the net.

So the choice is now more difficult.

If you are happy with a small screen and don’t need TV channels, then the alternative is to hook your PS3 up to a computer monitor. You will need a special cable, and a monitor with a digital input, but this will work fine. If your monitor doesn’t have speakers, then you will need to buy some.

If you want a screen larger than 22 inches, then definitely get a HTDV, but make sure it has at least one HDMI connector on the back and has a resolution of 1080i or 1080p and a screen refresh rate of 8ms or less.

Competition Over HDTV Technology Heats Up

There are a variety of technological factors that are causing the competition between all of the different TV service providers to heat up. The major technological innovation that most of these companies are using to try to attract new subscribers is HDTV. HDTV provides a TV picture that's a lot like a big screen movie picture, both in shape and level of detail in the picture. It also features a high quality sound format in the form of Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound that uses six total speaker to surround the audience with sound that goes along with what's happening on the HDTV screen. This combination has drummed up a lot of interest among viewers when it comes to getting this high quality entertainment in their own homes, and all of the major TV service providers are banking on this excitement to boost their subscriber rankings.

It should go without saying that, at least theoretically, the TV service provider that can offer the most HDTV channels will be the one to attract that most subscribers. Brining HDTV channels online is easier said than done though. At first, there just weren't that many HDTV channels available to offer. More recently however, there have been plenty of HDTV channels available, but not every TV service provider has the bandwidth required to transmit as many as they'd like.

The bandwidth limitations have been of particular concern to cable TV companies because they simply don't have as much available bandwidth as the satellite TV companies. This makes it much more difficult for them to offer as many channels as satellite TV companies can. There is a new technology that's rapidly being implemented by cable companies that could save them from losing the HDTV game though. This technology is called Switched Digital Video and it overcomes the bandwidth limitations by allowing a cable TV provider to transmit only the channel that a subscriber is watching to that subscriber, thereby freeing up its existing bandwidth to offer more channels. This means that a cable TV company can theoretically offer as many HDTV channels as it wants. It also means that cable TV companies will be well prepared to offer even more data intensive TV formats- like 3D HDTV and Ultra HDTV- as they become available.

The satellite TV industry has been in a better position to begin with when it comes to offering more HDTV channels, and despite the threat of cable TV companies with their Switched Digital Video technology (which doesn't work with satellite transmissions incidentally), satellite TV companies can still compete in the realm of HDTV. The approach of satellite TV companies is more of the brute force nature where they increase the amount of bandwidth available to them so that they can devote it to transmitting more HDTV channels. This simply involves launching more satellites.

The high level of competition has lead to some strange moves from the companies that are fighting for more subscribers. For example, a cable TV company has repeatedly sued a satellite TV company for claiming to be able to provide more HDTV channels than cable TV can offer. But the cable company claims that with Switched Digital Video it can offer more channels. The cable TV company seems more interested in arguing the point in court than it is in actually implementing the technology that will provide those channels.

Like everything else where TV is involved, the results of this competition will be determined by technology, economics, and ultimately human nature.

If you're looking for an LCD TV comparison, you're probably already in love with the idea of hanging a flat screen TV on your wall. It's really amazing how technology has progressed to the point where you can hang a big screen TV on your wall, then sit back and enjoy a fantastic HDTV picture of your favorite TV shows or sporting events.

Even more amazing is that as pictures have improved by leaps and bounds, the TVs have gotten thinner, and prices have plummeted. You know that any TV you choose is bound to net you a superb picture and slim form factor.

That being said, you know all the LCD TVs out there can't be the same, can they? Surely there must be some differences, right? Well, yes there are. There are a few things that some TVs do better than others and when making an LCD TV comparison, you should know how to find the differences. Although LCD TV prices have declined substantially in recent years, you want to be sure you're getting the most TV for your money, and the best one for your particular application.

One of the first things to think about is the physical size of the set. If it wasn't so common it would be funny, but people will often make or buy a cabinet, then try to find a TV to fit in the space allocated. Many times they're thwarted form going up to the next larger sized TV because one of the cabinet dimensions is an inch or so too small.

Take the time to choose your TV first, if you have the opportunity. This will also prevent you from designing or buying a cabinet for a particular TV, only to find it's been discontinued when it comes time to buy the TV.

The next thing is to look at some of the new LCD TVs with thin bezels. For example, this can allow you to fit a 40" TV where only a 37" set would fit before. Something to be aware of is that sometimes these extra thin bezel LCD TVs are deeper than their normal beveled cousins. If you're putting your new TV in a cabinet, this may not be a concern to you, but the extra 2" - 3" may make a big difference if you're hanging the set on a wall.

If the TV will fit where you'd like to put it, a check on picture quality is in order. After all your buying a new TV to watch it, and there are some ways you can compare the picture quality to determine which set has a better picture.

One problem with just looking at a set on the showroom floor is that rarely are all the TVs correctly adjusted for the best picture. Often they're shipped and set up in what the industry terms "torch mode". This is slang for having the settings adjusted to take advantage of most customer's preference for the brightest TV they see. If there are 10 TVs lined up, they'll gravitate toward the brightest one. In many cases the brightest TV is not the one with the best picture, especially if it has been adjusted to look artificially bright.

Most LCD TVs, especially 1080p sets, have more than enough brightness for any viewing situation, save putting the set in direct sunlight, but no brightness or contrast adjustment will save you there. The point is that looking at a TV in the showroom will often not provide you with an accurate representation of the set's available picture quality.

When shopping for an LCD TV, a 120Hz refresh rate is one feature that has gone a long way toward eliminating the motion artifact problems that used to be so prevalent in LCD televisions. It is common on most manufacturer's better LCD sets now and is known by many trade names.

Sharp has no trade name for their sets with the 120Hz feature, calling it just "120Hz frame rate conversion", Toshiba uses the moniker "ClearFrame™", Mitsubishi prefers "Smooth 120Hz™", and Sony's marketing department came up with "Motionflow™ 120Hz". It all means basically the same thing. Your LCD with this technology will look much better on fast moving images, like sports and scrolling text, than TVs without it.

If you're looking at one of the newest TVs, make sure they have plenty of inputs for connecting your BluRay player, cable box or satellite receiver, computer, or digital camcorder. In many instances, you will connect everything up to your surround sound receiver, then run a single cable to your TV.

For those not using a surround receiver, having plenty of inputs becomes vitally important. Make sure you have art least 3 HDMI inputs so you can get the best possible picture from HD digital video sources. A couple of component video inputs for older sources such as DVD players is a good idea as well.

Most new TVs have a digital tuner built in so you can connect an HDTV antenna and pick up signals broadcast over the air. Some TVs have what's called a QUAM tuner. This will allow you to get unencrypted digital cable programming. In many cases the cable company will broadcast local channels in full HDTV resolution "in the clear". That means they are not encrypted and you can watch them with no cable box, just the QUAM tuner built into your TV.

This will give some things to look for when comparing new LCD TVs. Whatever TV you decide to buy, you will get many years of enjoyment from your new set.

HDTV - To Widescreen Or Not To Widescreen

Well that is the question that many consumers as themselves. I am making a large purchase, do I want to get a wide screen or a traditional aspect screen. Here are a few things to consider when choosing to buy a widescreen HDTV, a traditional aspect HDTV or regular TV.

Older Analog TVs versus HDTV. Older era televisions are analog televisions unless they have a digital receiver built into them. In February 2009, all television broadcast stations will be required to broadcast in digital. This means analog televisions without digital tuners will be unusable unless they are hooked up to satellite or cable. These are not a good choice to buy. Move along down the row to HD enabled televisions. Luckily enough, all television equipment sold after May 25, 2007 must either contain a digital tuner or be identified at the point of sale as not having one.

LCD or Plasma. HDTV comes in multiple types that can vastly affect price. The liquid crystal display (LCD) type of HDTV dominates the consumer market in small-size to mid-size and is typically cheaper. Plasma television models dominate the consumer market in large-size models. This consideration is generally not an issue when deciding between a wide screen and a traditional aspect. What is a consideration is life expectancy and cost. A widescreen has more visual area that can "burn out."

Flat Panel Television versus Rear/Front Projection Television. HDTV designs that are plasma or LCD are generally found in the flat panel design. However, you can still find rear projection and front projection HDTVs sold for home theatre systems. In general a wide-screen version will add considerably to the requirements for room size, the total shelf weight and moving restrictions are your overall consideration when making this selection. Unless you have a dedicated home theatre room and plan on never moving again, it's generally suggested to stay away from Rear or Front Projection wide-screen television.

Widescreen for TV Broadcasts and Movies. Over 90 percent of all broadcasts are in traditional aspect. Most are not in widescreen formatting or have been pre-formatted coming from the broadcaster to fit traditional aspects. If you mostly watch regular television broadcasts and do not routinely use a service provider that has widescreen broadcasts or movies using widescreen aspects, then widescreen is not for you.

Using your Widescreen for Gaming. The beauty of current of having a widescreen for computer gaming is the ability to use the split screen option on many different games without feeling crushed. This is especially true on many First Person Shooter games. If you are an avid gamer, a widescreen HDTV will only enhance your game experience.

Using your HDTV for Work. Here is another example of where the widescreen really can assist the consumer. Some HDTVs are enabled to accept input from computers and can be used as a monitor for your work. You can often get two or three documents on your desktop and view them much easier with a widescreen than on a traditional aspect. If you use your HDTV as both a television and monitor, here is where it can pay off in many ways.

For most consumers, the widescreen HDTVs are the way to go with very little drawback. Unless you are only watching sitcoms or are setting up a home theatre in a small confined space, they are the most versatile aspect. You can watch both traditional aspect and get the full widescreen aspect on the same set of equipment. They are more useful than traditional aspect HDTVs as they can provide additional workspace and even a greater gaming experience.

Eye Candy? Which Wins? 1080i Vs 720p And What About 1080p?

The latest great thing in home theater displays is the emergence of 1080p resolution displays. p stands for progressive, which means the screen fills all at once at 1/60th of a second, versus i for interlaced, which means every other line, then the other half of the full picture, each field displaying at 1/30th of a second.

At this time, there is no source for broadcast 1080p programming. Instead, we have 1080i: two interlaced fields make a frame, at 1/30th second for each field.

Finger it out!

Take your fingers and spread them apart. That's a crude example of interlaced. When you bring the hands together, you combine both fields and you get the whole picture (one frame). It happens fast enough that you don't notice the effect unless there's motion on the screen, then you might see a difference in the smoothness of the motion.

Progressive is all the fingers at once. 720p is fewer pixels, faster: 1/60th second per frame.

1080 = 1920 x 1080 pixels | 720 = 1280 x 720 pixels

Till recently, HDTVs were either 720p or 1080i. Most TV transmissions were 1080i. I believe ABC adopted 720p because it would have shown sports with better pictures. I also remember back when Panasonic Broadcast underwrote ABC (as 720p) - or at least Monday Night Football. Fox and ESPN now also do 720P. The others are 1080i.

The new 1080p sets don't have the front end circuitry to actually receive that resolution. But, again, nothing is transmitting that res anyway. What the advantage is, is how these sets show 1080i - they have the pixel count to do it without trouble. They deinterlace the transmission and present it full frame without throwing away any detail. A 720p set has to downconvert a 1080i signal. In that downconversion you can lose some detail.

(BUT) OH SAY CAN YOU SEE?

But there's a more important issue - can you really see the difference in resolution between 1080i and 1080p? Tests of visual acuity to determine the resolution required of a television transmission system by the BBC's J.O. Drewery and R. Salmon determined that at 9 feet, a 50 inch screen at 720p's resolution will give you all the resolution you can see! At 9 feet, a 56 incher needs 1080i to avoid seeing the pixel structure.
If you sit farther or closer, you may need more resolution.

1080i vs 720p: MOTION CHANGES EVERYTHING

Motion is different issue. If you want to see motion clearly, then live action 720p is what looks best, compared to 1080i. Here's why: the information content of 720p is about the same as 1080i, though what it lacks in spatial resolution, it makes up for in temporal resolution (because the picture is at 1/60th of a second, not 1/30th x 2.) On 1080i, this would show as flickered or jagged edges on bright horizontal objects (like in the background of a camera pan.)

The good news? As the retailers hawk 1080p, you might find a killer deal on a 720p set and not give up anything in what I'll call 'effective' picture quality to get it.

Using a calibration stick

This method costs a little but is the one I recommend the most. This requires a visit to the electronics store and buying a HDTV calibration stick. With a simple step by step calibration wizard and a little concentration you will obtain a very good overall picture quality. It's not expensive, you don't have to be a tech guru and the outcome of this method will be very good. That's way this method is the most recommended one.

Ask for professional help

This method requires you to spend more money (around 300$) but without a doubt, no one can make a better calibration then a professional technician. If you can afford it and you don't mind spending some cash then this is how you can get the best out of your HDTV.

HDTV and Internet Driving Demand For Satellite "SpotBeams"

It was about a hundred years ago that Marconi invented radio communications (1902). By 1930, many homes in the United States and Europe had an AM radio receiver. The world changed quite a bit in the 20th century. Courier 1B, (Philco), the first active communication satellite, was launched in 1960. We now faces new communication challenges. High Definition Television (HDTV), which needs a much larger bandwidth for transmission, coupled with the current demand for hundreds of television channels and the growth in Internet communications, is resulting in a communication bandwidth shortage. One tool being used to address this problem is Satellite SpotBeams. By 2010, 60% of TV receivers will use a Satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

What are Satellite SpotBeams?

Until recently, communication satellites transmitted with a very broad signal. The same signal that was received in the California was from the same source as the signal that was received in New York. Satellites that are not "SpotBeams" send out a signal over very large areas, transmitting data across the USA.

SpotBeams are different. It is similar to a searchlight focused on one area of the country. A typical SpotBeam has a radius of only 50-100 miles. Depending on where you are in the country, you won't detect the beam unless you are in the focus. With this tool, the same frequency spectrum can be used with different source material, in different regions. In addition, the system is flexible enough to increase power on specific transmissions when needed to compensate for local weather conditions. SpotBeam technology is ideal for the transmission of video requiring ultra high bit rates such as HDTV.

DirecTV and DISH Network were one of the first to use SpotBeams. The transmission of local TV channels is ideal since a signal focused on an area was a perfect fit for the application. The SpotBeam technology is being applied on newer satellites using the Ka Band (Ka band is 19-30 GHz). There are several Ka band satellites in use that do not use SpotBeams: Advanced Communication Technology System (NASA USA), Superbird and N-STAR (Japan), HOT BIRD 6 (Eutelsat, France), DFS Kopernikus (Germany), and Italsat (Italy), but the newer, more advanced satellites are using SpotBeam technology.

Anik F2 (built by Boeing, and operated by Telesat) was launched on July 17, 2004, and began service on October 1. It is currently the world's largest communication satellite at 157 feet long and 27 feet wide. Anik F2 provides Internet service, distance learning, and telemedicine to the United States and Canada. Anik F2 has 45 transponders delivering broadband signals using Spotbeams. A third of the Spotbeams provide broadband services to Canada. The rest are used to provide Internet service to the U.S.

HDTV SpotBeams

HDTV SpotBeams used by DirecTV and DISH Network (Ka-band) are often narrower in focus than the Ku band SpotBeams used for Standard Definition TV. If you live more than 50 miles from the signal center in a populated region, it is possible that you will not be able to receive the HDTV SpotBeam. DirecTV and DISH Network have the technical capability of transmitting a broad SpotBeam signal, especially since the newer Satellites can operate at a higher power. It makes good business sense for them to maximize coverage, but there are tradeoffs.

In a rural state like New Mexico, it makes sense to have the SpotBeam cover a 200-mile radius, because that enables more subscribers which results into more revenue. In New England it sometimes makes sense to focus the signal more narrowly, since the SpotBeams are more densely packed together. However, since different frequencies are used for adjacent SpotBeams, overlap usually can be managed.

SpotBeam Satellites and Two-Way Communications

According to Northern Sky Research, there are 15 million U.S. households without access to broadband Internet service. SpotBeam satellites operated by WildBlue and Telesat have already reached over 300,000 Internet subscribers since their launch in 2005.

One advantage of Ka band is that it requires a smaller dish to offer very good performance. Ka band using SpotBeams is more efficient than a traditional C or Ku band satellites (the technology used by the other communication satellite systems). The service is able to deliver significant improvements in performance. A Ka band satellite can provide as much as an 8X increase in capacity over Ku band satellites. The technology can provide upload speeds as fast as 16 Mbps and download speed as fast as 30 Mbps. Three Ka band satellites with SpotBeam technology are already in service in North America: Telesat Canada's Anik F2, WildBlue Communications Wildblue 1, and Hughes Network Systems SPACEWAY 3.

ViaSat-1 and Ka-Sat: Satellite Communications on Steroids

A fourth North American satellite, ViaSat-1 (another Telesat Canada satellite) is planned for launch in 2011. This system is a very advanced Ka-band broadband satellite ordered by ViaSat. The amount of bandwidth enabled by ViaSat-1, equipped with ViaSat's "SurfBeam" networking system, is unparalleled. Total throughput is designed to be over 100 Gigabits per second, which is more capacity than the current North American fleet of two-way Ka, C and Ku band combined capacity. In 2010, Ka-Sat will launch a satellite to provide similar service in Europe.

HDTV signals require 4-5 times as much bandwidth for transmission as standard definition signals, even with sophisticated MPEG-4 encoding. In addition, our Internet communications bandwidth requirements continue to grow at about 50% annually. Keeping up with the demand will require a smorgasbord of options, and Satellite SpotBeams (Ka band), will be very important in the mix.

Review of Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 46" 1080p LCD HDTV is an elegant looking set with its piano black frame. The black finish is reflective, but not annoyingly shiny like a mirror as long as you don't put it directly in front of a light source. It's a serious looking LCD HDTV with its black finish and anti-glare screen. Not only does it look nice aesthetically, but it looks awesome where it counts the most, the picture.

The picture, like the Sony Bravia V2500 models, looks amazing. No annoying glares will ruin your viewing experience and the fogging that hit some of the owners with the V2500 model is gone. If there are any, you must be unlucky. The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV has a 60 Hz refresh rate while the higher end models have 120 Hz so the motion blurring will not be as smooth as the more expensive sets. That doesn't mean it's blurry though. It's still pretty smooth during fast action sequences and you probably won't be able to tell anyway when playing HD content.

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV up-scales 480i standard definition content with its Reality Creation Multi Function v1.0 technology and you can see that it truly helps make SD stuff less horrible than it otherwise should be. This basically means watching standard programming is good, but not at the level you're used to when watching with a CRT, but also not as bad as many other LCD TVs.

The black and the contrast is good unlike what has been expected of LCDs. The colors are rich and the picture comes to life more so than other LCD HDTVs. Side by side with the Samsung or Sharp, the Sony looked better. In fact it can even compete with some of the plasma TVs out there. Just switch to normal mode and not use vivid mode and make some tweaks from there to your liking and the image will be near perfect. Try sharpening the image and increasing the black.

Configuring the settings in the Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV is a breeze with the highly regarded XMB menu system that's also in the PS3. Speaking of the PS3, watching blu-ray on the KDL-46V3000 is simply stunning. If you don't have a PS3 or a Blu-Ray player, you need to get one if you're getting an HDTV. HD-DVD is dead.

The Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV does not have PIP or picture in picture, but it does have P&P or picture & picture. You can play video from two input sources at the same time, but only from HDMI, TV tuner, and video on the left side of the TV and component on the right. That means no watching HDMI & HDMI at the same time. It's not a deal breaker since the picture quality is way up there.

Sound quality is good should you choose not to invest in a home theater surround sound system, but it does lack some oomph in the bass department. It's much better than many LCD panels out there considering how small the piano black frame is.

I recommend the Sony Bravia KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD HDTV if you don't want to spend a few extra Ben Franklins on the XBR4 and you don't want the older, but still excellent KDL-46V2500. You can't go wrong with this choice and it's one of the best bangs for the buck.

It is tempting to delegate the decision making to a local salesperson. This is not wise. Studies show that the many of the salespeople at your retailer are not as knowledgeable or unbiased as we would hope. For example, one study showed that 37% of salespeople steered customers away from plasma HDTV systems because of the "burn in of plasma displays", when burn in was eliminated as a problem several years ago (J.D. Power and Associates). The study concluded that the salespeople steered customers to the more expensive LCD systems.

"Television shoppers who visit mass merchants may be more concerned with obtaining a low price and may not be seeking expert advice. However, television shoppers should be aware that the lower prices they find at mass merchants are primarily due to the fact that these stores tend to carry second tier brand TVs, rather than major brands such as Sony or Panasonic. When pricing for a specific television model is compared at each type of retailer, the prices are surprisingly similar," J.D. Power's Larry Wu.

HDTV Video Format:1080p, 1080i or 720p: the higher number is better, right? Even though 1080i technically has a higher resolution, it is not the obvious choice. Most networks have opted for the 1080i format; because it provides the higher resolution, while ABC, Fox, ESPN, and the National Geographic Channel have chosen the smoother pictures of 720p. 1080i is delivered in interlaced format (the "old" format), meaning that your TV set draws each frame in two passes: once for the even horizontal lines and a second pass for the odd lines.

The 720p (Progressive format, the standard in Europe) has fewer lines of resolution than 1080i, but delivers pictures that look slightly smoother than the interlaced image, especially when there's a lot of movement on the screen, like sports.

The new king is 1080p, which is the best of both worlds. Progressive scanning with a higher resolution. Little programming is currently available in 1080p, but 1080p systems should be able to convert 1080i source material into a 1080p picture.

Source of Programming

One of the choices, which DVD player to purchase, became much simpler recently. Blu-Ray became the de facto choice with the withdrawal of the alternative, HD DVD. The other choice that must be made is: satellite, cable, or antenna programming. A fourth choice, IPTV, which is TV over the Internet, can no longer be easily dismissed.

More than 100 million U.S. homes can receive HDTV from their cable system, and all of the top 100 cable markets in the country have available HDTV programming. Unfortunately, most cable providers carry only a few of the 50+ available HDTV networks. While HDTV local channel selection is generally better on cable than satellite, the major satellite companies offer more national HDTV channels than almost every cable provider. By 2010, 60% of U.S. homes will use a satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

IPTV is not yet available across the country. Currently, when it is available, IPTV usually offers about 25 HDTV channels.

Audio Subsystem

The Audio component of the HDTV system is very important. George Lucas (Star Wars) once said audio is half the movie viewing experience. Most HDTV programming today includes more than two channels (stereo) of audio. The most popular programming is encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1, which has five full bandwidth channels plus a subwoofer channel (for the earthquake effects).

Surround speakers would include two front speaker spaced as far from the monitor as possible, two speakers at the back of the room, a center channel, above or under the television that delivers most of the dialogue; and the subwoofer on the floor for the low-frequency bass. Subwoofers are multidirectional, so you can put them anywhere in the room.

If we are to maximize the effect of our wall mount system, we may want to use in wall and/or in ceiling speakers. This results in a cosmetically sophisticated installation.

System Interconnect (Cabling)

The cables used are important, but it is important to know what to prioritize about the cables. It is common for consumers to spend a large amount of money on cables, but for the wrong reasons, and still result in an inferior performance.

To fully utilize high-definition programming (HDTV), either coaxial component cables (red, blue and green, sometimes called "RGB")), a digital visual interface (DVI) cable, or a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cable is needed. This is in contrast with the red, yellow and white composite (RCA) cords, or the round-ended S-Video cable used by standard definition TV.

An HDMI is the preferred pick for the ultimate in audio and video quality. Look at the back of your TV and you'll see several options. Depending on the unit chosen, you might have to buy these cables separately. Cables can be expensive. If you are choosing largely on the basis of price, your choice can be circumvented by the need to purchase separate cabling.

Cables are one of the details that can be chosen poorly, and result in an overall unsatisfactory experience. Details are important.

Installation Decisions

Select the right installation location. This will be decided by the size and shape of the room. An ideal wall should be at least twice the width of the display because you should have a minimum distance for audible separation for the front channel speakers. Choose a location that minimizes ambient light, especially directly across from the screen.

With some HDTV models, the manufacturer will offer a specific mount for your set. Plan on spending about $250 for the mount. If a system advertises "VESA Compatible' or "VESA mount", VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association, and this display is designed to work with VESA standard mounts. If not, look at the back of the display and check for threaded screw inserts to which a mount could be attached. A minimum of four screw inserts is needed. Tilt wall mounts enable the user to change the angle of the display, and can help reduce glare from ambient light.

A wall mount on an exterior wall will be probably be a more difficult installation than on an interior wall. Exterior walls typically offer more obstructions, including insulation, than interior walls. Exterior walls may be built with fire-blocks. These horizontal braces or blocks are generally found about halfway up the wall, and significantly increase the difficulty of passing the wiring from your equipment up to the display.

Decide if the wires are going inside the wall or on the outside. You should not run the power cord inside a wall as it is against NEC (National Electric Code), except when executed by a professional electrician. If you choose to install the cables on the outside of the wall, there are cable management raceways available at your local home improvement store that will attach to the wall with a cover that snaps into place. If the wires are going to be run on the inside of the wall you will need a drywall keyhole saw or a utility knife to be able to cut holes in the sheet rock.

A good idea is to create a molding that will be used as a cover for the cables. If the power cable(s) will be outside the wall, then the rationale for running the other (signal) cables inside the wall is reduced. Either select a cable tray that matches your wall or paint the cover. It will look very natural, and will be easier to maintain than cables in the wall.

The right HDTV hardware, the best program source, an awesome audio subsystem, the correct electrical interconnects, and well-chosen installation decisions will result in a terrific theater system. Now, get out the popcorn.

Don't give up on tubes...With flat panel TVs emerging nowadays such as plasmas and LCDs, most consumers are highly misinformed and believe that the quality of a flat panel is better than that of a tube (CRT) TV. This is not true at all. The image quality of a plasma or LCD TVs far inferior to a CRT, such as the Sony KD-34XBR970. Even worse, more and more people are buying these flat panel TVs as a 'status symbol' and do not understand true picture quality. Why do you think studios use CRT monitors during production and editing instead of a plasma TV? Most studios want the best, most accurate picture possible, so they use CRT monitors. The quality of the Sony KD-34XBR970 is much like a studio monitor, and surpasses all other displays regardless of cost. The dot pitch is so fine and the picture has so much realism to the point where all other displays look dull and muddy in comparison. Convergence and geometry is perfect out of the box, and the set looked fantastic. Its picture had depth and dimension, unlike the flat look of most plasma and LCD TVs. HD channels look amazing they are very real and are not overly enhanced. The Sony's on-board processing and DRC is perfect and does not make sources look pixelated at all. The picture is fine, clear, and has exceptional detail.

One caveat to remember: The set is shipped in 'Vivid' mode, which is meant to grab your attention in the stores with a bright picture but lacking in clarity. It is way too bright and much too sharp. You can see outlines and picture artifacts in this mode. If you keep the TV in Vivid mode, you are guaranteed to burn the tubes in no time and shorten the life of the TV. Also, the vivid mode is very inaccurate in color reproduction. I have my set calibrated in the 'Movie' mode, with a picture (white level) setting of 20/63 and a brightness (black level) setting of 30/63. Remember, it is very important to lower the 'picture' setting because it controls the amount of white light on the screen. If you do this, the tube will last a very long time and you will see an exceptional image. On the other hand, the 'brightness' setting controls the amount of dark areas you see in the picture. Turning this setting up will allow you to see more dark areas in a movie, but will not burn the tubes or impair image quality. An accurate image is better than a bright one.

Finally, the color decoder needs adjustment as it emphasizes red severely and makes people look reddish or tanned. If you change the 'color axis' setting from 'Default' to 'Monitor,' the colors will be much more accurate and vibrant. If you adjust this set properly and take good care of it, it will produce the best picture of any TV and will last a very long time. (My old XBR TV is 16 years old and still going.) I have a neighbor who spent $10,000 on a plasma TV and the picture quality is far worse than this set. What kind of TV would you buy? Is status symbol more important than image quality? Remember, that after reading this review, you are a much more educated consumer.

3-D HDTV With DLP

3D is an exciting new feature for the home theater market. For some dramatic movies or soap operas, 3D might seem out of place. But for sports, action movies, etc. 3D makes as much difference as color vs. black and white. And the new 3D technology is superior to the 3D system that has been used in theaters.

The commercial successes of recent 3D films like "Beowulf", "Meet the Robinsons", and "Journey to the Center of the Earth", is sparking interest with the movie studios to produce more 3D content material. Disney, Universal, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Thomson and IMAX are currently exploring the potential 3D HDTV market. Disney said it would begin making all its computer-animated films in 3D. According to Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, all of the major studios have 3D projects under way. There will be over 2,500 theatre screens equipped with the Digital 3D technology by the end of 2009. All of this content will be available to the home theater market. The Big Question: will the 3D market be pervasive enough for major networks, especially the sports subset, to broadcast in 3D?

3D Distribution

It will likely be the satellite TV companies like DirecTV and Dish Network that distribute 3D versions of HDTV programming first. 3D movies should take about the same bandwidth as other 120 fps (frame per second) high def movies. The satellite companies have enough broadcast bandwidth to support niche markets (the cable companies do not), and for now, 3D HDTV is a niche market.

"Satellite's going to be constrained not so much by how many channels they can carry than by how many they can get," said Bob Scherman, Satellite Business News.

By 2010, it is projected that 60% of TV receivers in the United States will use a satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

3D HDTV Home Theater Systems

Because of the high frame rate for 3D, and the need for synchronization, LCD screens are generally incompatible with advanced 3D. However, prototypes by Phillips have been demonstrated at upwards of $20,000, and this technology does not require glasses. The Phillips technology is optically very complicated. Unlike electronics, it cannot be assumed that the price will come down.

By the end of this year (2008), more than one million 3D ready DLP HDTVs, manufactured by Mitsubishi and Samsung, will have been sold in the U.S. The technology functions by supplying a 60 Hz signal to each eye (equivalent to 120 Hz total). These sets can display standard HDTV, and are compatible with 3D material. Some source material is available for download, and Blu-Ray 3D discs are becoming available. "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" was the first 3D Blu-ray Disc.

The Glasses: Field Sequential 3D

Special glasses are used with the DLP 3D system. The system is called "Field Sequential 3D" or HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential). This technology uses electronic shutter glasses instead of red-blue lenses we are used to at the movies. The effect is definitely superior. Our eyes see a slightly offset view of a scene. The two slightly different views are combined by the brain to result in our ability to see in 3D. Field Sequential 3D simulates this experience with shutter glasses. The shutter is not mechanical, but instead an LCD filter, that blocks vision when the opposite eye's view is shown.

A HDTV set with 120 Hz refresh rate is recommended for 3D viewing. The 3D system uses half of the total information for each eye. If we use a TV with a total of 60 Hz refresh rate, it would supply only 30 Hz to each eye, and that refresh rate would be visible (flicker).

When designing a 3D system with previous 3D techniques, we have the choice of either sending two equal bandwidth signals with full information, effectively doubling the signal bandwidth, or sending the signal such that either the horizontal or vertical resolution is halved, one half for each eye. Doubling the bandwidth would be a problem since the HDTV signal bandwidth capacity is already at a premium. Using the same bandwidth as non-3D material means that we can utilize the technology with current HDMI or DVI interfaces.

The alternative to cut resolution is unattractive, since we have worked to so hard to increase our system to high definition, we don't want to compromise. By using alternate frames for each eye, we see a high definition signal without flicker.

Two sets of wireless shutter glasses, with a control transmitter (InfraRed (IR), the same technology as the TV's remote control) cost about $100.

"Hang-Ups" Holding up DLP

Many consumers have a fascination with the idea of hanging their new big screen HDTV on the wall, like a painting. It's worth noting that most LCD and Plasma big screen TVs never actually get mounted on the wall. It is a significant challenge to mount something that weighs 60-150 pounds on the wall, and once installed, it's a continuing challenge for maintenance (for example, a 50 inch Pioneer PDP-5070HD weighs 128 pounds).

According to the NPD Group, only 13 percent of current LCD TV owners and 25 percent of plasma TV owners have their set mounted on the wall.

DLP is very popular among those who want larger high picture quality screens at affordable prices. For the money, DLP easily provides the highest quality-size value. An LCD of the same size and price will not have the picture quality of a DLP. DLP is also available in larger screen sizes then LCD televisions.

However, a DLP rear projection TV is a few inches thicker than an LCD or Plasma screen. LCD screens are usually 7-10 inches thick; DLP sets are usually 12-17 inches thick. Because of the fascination with mounting their sets on the wall, this difference of a few inches becomes the deciding factor for many consumers' purchase decisions.

Texas Instruments, who manufactures the DLP chips in a foundry in South Korea, sees renewed potential for the technology, which uses tiny mirrors on a semiconductor. The new LED Light Engine call "Phlatlight" (manufactured by Luminus) replaces the arc lamp and color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs. Samsung has had their own proprietary LED lamp system for a couple of years. The LED Light Engine will need to be replaced infrequently (unlike the cold-cathode fluorescent lamps that had to be replaced every few years).

DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than comparably sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color wheel in the design means they perform with less noise. The DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on and off more than 15,000 times per second to deliver a picture without blur for fast moving images such as sports.

DLP HDTV sets are a very smart choice for most people, but be selective. Many of the HDTV sets in stores still do not have important technology, such as LED backlights.

The compatibility of the TV for 3D can be verified by looking for an input on the back of unit, marked "3D Ready".

Home Theater Personal Computer (HTPC)

An important trend in the home theater is the integration of the personal computer (PC) with the home theater. Integrating a PC into your home entertainment center has many advantages in addition to enabling 3D video. Downloading movies is one of the advantages. The HTPC should have a graphics card with a DVI connector (Digital Video Interface). Both XP and Vista will support Microsoft's product for the home theater.

HDTV and 3D video is computation intensive, meaning a high-performance computer. For 720p videos, a dual core microprocessor is needed; 1080p or 1080i videos require a quad core microprocessor for smooth playback. Video files are very large (!), so the larger the hard-drive, the better.

DirectX 9 graphics drivers (software) need to be installed, if they are not already present. To find your current version, Click "START" and then "RUN" from your Windows desktop. Type "dxdiag" in the "Run" box.

Software is available from several different vendors; "StereoPlayer" (Version 1.3.4) from 3DTV.at is available. Purchase of StereoPlayer is about $50. While you are at 3DTV.AT also download the GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder. Alternatives to Stereoplayer include "Dynamic Digital Depth" (ddd.com), "Stereoscopic Player" and "Tridef Visualizer".

Usually, a flat screen HDTV carries two basic types of connections - analog connections and digital or HD connections, although some new ones only come with the latter. Analog connections are comprised of radio frequency (RF), composite video and S-video connections, which can be used to connect cable boxes, VCRs, DVD players, antennas and some game consoles, of which S-video has the capability of delivering the highest video quality. There are also analog audio connections for older audio receivers and stereo components.

HD connections, on the other hand, consist of component video or YPbPr, FireWire or IEEE 1394, VGA or PC input, DVI and HDMI connections, which are what you should be looking for if you want to enjoy the highest video and audio quality from your HDTV. Check for HDMI connections, in particular, since these allow you to get superb video and audio quality from most HD sources, including HD cable boxes, Blu-Ray players, surround sound speakers, HDTV tuners and newer game consoles.

Connecting Your Cable Box

To get cable on your HDTV, you simply have to connect the wire running from the cable outlet to the box then plug the box to the back of your HDTV using an RF, composite, S-video or HDMI connection, depending on the type of cable box and the input you have available on your HDTV. If you want to record your favorite shows on an HD DVR like a TiVo box, you have to connect your cable box to the DVR first instead of connecting it directly to the HDTV, then connect the DVR to the HDTV via the connections provided.

Connecting your Speakers

To enjoy the superior sound quality offered by your HDTV, it is recommended that you connect external speakers, whether a pair of stereo speakers or four, six or seven surround sound speakers. You cannot connect them directly to your HDTV, though. Rather, you have to connect them first to the AV receiver that comes with the system then connect the AV receiver to the HDTV. Make sure you connect the wires to the right ports on the receiver. For example, if the pair of wires are coming from the front right speaker, they should be connected to the inputs labeled front right, specifically to the ports that match the color of each.

Connecting Your Computer

You may also want to use your flat screen HDTV as your computer monitor. If you do, you will need to get a high quality video card for your computer then connect the CPU to the HDTV via the output provided on the card. If the card only has an S-video, component video or VGA output, you will need to run an audio cable from the soundcard of the CPU to the HDTV, as well. You can also connect your laptop to your HDTV if you want to use it as your DVD or Blu-Ray player, which is especially a good idea if your laptop has an HDMI output.

Connecting Your Game Console

You can also enjoy playing video console games on your flat screen HDTV. In fact, most HDTVs have a dedicated gaming mode that disables video processing to eliminate controller delay. There are two ways to connect your game console - through your AV receiver or directly to your HDTV. Either way, the type of cable you need depends on your game console. Wii game consoles have component video outputs while Xbox and PlayStation consoles have HDMI for superior video quality.

As for your other equipment, simply look at their available outputs then shop for the correct cable. Don't hesitate to ask at the electronics store if you're not sure about which cable you are looking for. Your set-up depends on the types of equipment you have as well as how many of them you want to use with your flat screen HDTV. If you are using a lot of equipment, you might want to go with a wireless hub so the back of your HDTV isn't too crowded. You might want to get a universal remote control, as well.

Having an HDTV can change the way you watch television forever. However, not everything has to change. For example, you can still keep on recording your favorite television shows and movies. You just need to get an HDTV recorder.

There are various types of HDTV recorder. One is the DVD recorder with built-in ATSC tuner. This type of tuner is the same one built into HDTVs, which means that your DVD recorder can receive digital over-the-air signals, including high definition broadcast signals, which, in turn, allows you to record them.

In spite of this, though, the signals will still be downscaled and recorded in a standard definition format, and not a high definition format, since they are stored on a regular DVD. This, in turn, means that you won't be able to watch them in their original HD format when you play them back, although the video quality can be almost the same if your DVD recorder has an upscaling feature.

Another type of HD recorder is the High Definition Digital Video Recorder or HD DVR. Just like the standard DVR, an HD DVR allows you to view and record your favorite shows, or even more. The only difference is that they are programmed to receive and store high definition broadcast signals, as well as analog ones. HD DVRs can be purchased from satellite and cable television companies, often as an upgrade or add-on to your subscription, but they can also be bought separately.

Currently, TiVo HD DVRs are the most popular choice, since they also allow you to pause, rewind or fast forward your favorite shows, or even show them in slow motion so you won't have to miss a single detail. TiVo also offers dual tuner functionality, which means you can record a show while watching another - something which is not found on the more expensive Sony HD DVRs. One good thing about Sony HD DVRs, though, like the DHG-HDD250 and the DHG-HDD500, is that they can store more hours - 30 or 60 hours, respectively - and offer an on-screen electronic program guide (EPG) at no additional charge.

Internal HDTV tuners or HDTV tuner cards, which are also called PC tuners or video capture cards, also have HDTV recorder capability. Like some HD DVRs, some allow you to pause live HD content as well. These functions, aside from their lower price, are why some prefer them over the external HD tuners or regular set-top-boxes. However, they have some disadvantages, too, such as the fact that they require you to have a computer and are more difficult to install.

Once installed, though, an HDTV tuner card can help you record your favorite shows on a disc without having to scale them down - if you have a Blu-Ray writer installed in your computer, that is. This is because you can get them to store them on a Blu-Ray disc instead of a regular DVD - either a BD-R disc for single use or a reusable BD-RE disc - which is capable of delivering content in full HD 1080p format. You can only play this disc on a Blu-Ray player or reader, though.

Now that you know about the HDTV recorders available, it is up to you to choose which HDTV recorder you want to get, depending on which one is most convenient for you or which one fits your budget. No matter which type you choose, though, just keep in mind that the HDTV recorder is there to help enhance your personal viewing experience and should not be used for profit in accordance with copyright laws.

HDTV Enters the Fourth Dimension - 120Hz Frame Rates

There's a lot of talk these days about frame rates in the new HDTVs. The frame rate is simply the number of distinct images a TV screen can display in a second, and is also known as the display rate or "Hertz". Hertz is the scientific unit for cycles per second, and is abbreviated "Hz". The latest buzzword is "120Hz", which means a display rate of 120 frames per second. This is twice as fast as most HDTVs are capable of (60Hz), so it ought to make the moving pictures look smoother. But, the human eye can only process about 20 to 25 distinct images per second, so why should it matter what the frame rate is, as long as it is faster than your eyes can see?

The answer comes when you realize that not all video is filmed at the same rate. Movies are usually filmed at a rate of 24 Hz, most TV is filmed at 30 Hz, and some sports events are now being filmed at 60 Hz.

Some simple math will show the problem and reveal the solution. When a TV set wants to display 60 frames per second, and the cable TV company sends it 30 frames per second, that's easy to deal with: the TV shows each frame twice in a row, creating an image made up of two consecutive frames. Each image will last exactly 1/30th of a second on the screen, and things will look perfectly smooth.

So what happens when your DVD player sends 24 frames per second to the TV, but the TV still wants to show 60 on the screen? This is a little slower than the cable TV frame rate, so if it simply shows each frame twice and then waits for the next one, there will be a black gap in between and the movie will look terrible. So, the TV needs to triple one frame, double the next, triple the following one, and so on, giving it a total of 60 frames to show each second. This is known as 3:2 Pulldown.

The 3:2 Pulldown trick works OK, but there is a problem. One image lasts a 20th of a second, then the next lasts a 30th. A 20th of a second is long enough for most people to tell that it's really a static image, and when the camera pans around in a scene, things will seem to move unevenly. But if your TV is able to display 120 frames per second, it can take the 24 Hz input and simply show each frame 5 times in a row for a total of 1/24 (or 5/120) second per frame, with no variation from frame to frame. And when 30Hz video comes in, it displays each frame 4 times in a row, for a total of 1/30 (or 4/120) second per frame. Problem solved.

Now that frame rates are fast enough to display any kind of input smoothly, HDTVs not only have high resolution in the x and y (height and width) dimensions, but also in the t (time) dimension. As in all kinds of digital media, higher resolution means smaller units of data, and that means a more lifelike reproduction of reality. The 120Hz frame rate won't be very common until 2008, but a few HDTVs already have it, like the Sony Bravia XBR4 series and the Sharp Aquos 92U series.

HDTV has certainly entered the fourth dimension (time), but has skipped the third (depth) in the process. Until we see start seeing holographic movies on DVD, we'll have to wait for true four-dimensional TV.

When you are looking for cheap digital cameras, you can look at different manufacturers and different models. The camera only has 6.3 megapixels, but is a lightweight and compact camera that fits anywhere. Two other cameras to look at are the Kodak Easyshare V1253 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8. If you are looking for cheap digital cameras, you can find many different models that offer quality pictures and some nice features. These are just a few that you can look at.

While Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Fuji are some of the best when it comes to high quality digital cameras, they're certainly not the only game in town. There are equal and better cameras around, you just need to know where to look.

HDTV Technology - Should I Get a 1080p or 720p HDTV?

As you search for the perfect HDTV, you'll come across dozens of different terms that explain different types of technology, different styles of display and different levels of quality. One term that you will need to be familiar with is the screen resolution. An HDTV picture is made up of many small dots, or "pixels", and the amount of pixels that are used to make the picture is referred to as the resolution. In general, the more pixels, the better, and since an HDTV has more pixels than a regular TV, that's one of the things that makes it better.

There are two different levels of resolution commonly used in modern HDTVs. The lower one is called "720p", which means that there are 720 rows of pixels and it's a progressive display. In a typical widescreen HDTV, each row has 1280 pixels. The higher resolution, 1080p, means 1080 rows of pixels, usually with 1920 pixels per row.

What, you may ask, is a progressive display? In a progressive display, 30 times a second, the screen shows the full picture, then erases it to make room for the next frame. The other way to show a picture is with an "integrated display". That's where the TV draws the even rows of the picture on the screen, then the odd rows, then the even rows of the next frame, and so on. This technique has been used in regular TV sets for decades, because it takes about half as much effort and looks almost as good as a progressive display. Now that we have better technology, though, we can make every HDTV with a progressive display and bring picture quality up to the highest possible level. TV shows are still usually broadcast in an integrated format because it takes less bandwidth, but an HDTV will always "de-interlace" these shows to display progressively onscreen.

If you want to get a really big HDTV, you'll want to seriously consider 1080p resolution. In any set larger than 50 inches, a lower resolution will look choppy, since you'll be able to see individual pixels.

So, it would seem that 1080p is clearly better, and 720p is not really worth considering. But, there are actually some good reasons to choose 720p over 1080p:

Input source.

You will only get the full benefit of a 1080p HDTV if you are watching 1080p content. Almost all TV broadcasts are still in 720p or 1080i, so a 720p set will handle them fine.

Screen size.

If the screen size is smaller than 50 inches, it will be very hard to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. At a normal viewing distance, they will look essentially the same.

Cost.

A 1080p set will almost always cost more than a similar set built with 720p resolution. If you can't see much difference in picture quality, why spend more?

Other factors.

When looking at the big picture in your HDTV purchase, the screen resolution is only one factor. Contrast ratio, black level, likelihood of problems and even customer service can all be more important factors than screen resolution. Don't let one exciting feature convince you to buy an inferior set.

The best way to get that big picture is to do research on the internet, look at HDTV reviews, see the sets in person if possible, and think about the factors that are really important to you. Using an online HDTV tutorial can also help point you in the right direction.

Screen Failed 15 Months After Purchase
BEWARE!!! This product only has a 12 month Warranty. When I got mine in June 2008 I thought it was the greatest thing. Now it's August 2009, only 15 months old and tonight I have a 5 inch wide red tinted vertical bar from top to bottom just left of the center of the screen. Of course, it's no longer covered by warranty. At $2000, you would expect the product to last longer than 1 year. I can't begin to imagine how much it will be to repair this problem.

The last TV I bought before this was a Samsung Tube TV in 1993 and it's still working great.

Many parents like to try shopping at resale or consignment stores. These stores are great if you actually spend less. Too many people simply spend the same amount, but bring more home. Some people spend more without realizing it. A child can have too many clothes. If there are clothes that don't get worn, they were a waste of money. Buying out of season clothes off the sales racks is a little risky. You need to be sure that your child will be that size come the next winter. When you are shopping, think about how fast your children are growing. But you should.

Balancing your checkbook is the starting point of managing your finances. Millions of Americans don't do it regularly. Some people don't even write down the exact change on the checks they write. Some people enter false amounts into their check register to think they have less money than they really do. Others want to hide things from their spouses. Several only balance their checkbooks once a year when they do taxes.

Okay, I skipped two months when my daughter was born. When I finally sat down to get it all balanced, it took hours. It was awful.

The most time effective way to balance your account is on a weekly basis. I fully believe that the longer you wait between balancing sessions, the more errors you will find. A checkbook that just won't add up is a nightmare that is often never figured out.

Imagine my surprise after being married for a decade to find out that my husband didn't know how to balance a checkbook. Oh- he never overdrew an account or had a problem figuring out how much money he had. He just didn't know how to sit down and add it all up on paper. When he took over the complete management of our finances, it didn't last a month. But he did learn how to balance the checkbook.

Balancing your checkbook is simply matching your records with the bank's records. You compare your register to your monthly bank statement. You can quickly do this on the computer, but remember that you are entering the numbers on your end, so mistakes can still be made. You can also do this with pen and paper, which is often preferred by a lot of people. I use a large log book that will hold almost a whole month of spending per page. I like being able to look over a long span of time at once. I use post notes to keep track of when I balance and any discrepencies.

The first step is to regularly write down all receipts. We have a basket next to where we empty our pockets every evening. It is habit to drop all receipts in the basket. When money is tight, I might balance it every other day. This is easy by checking my account via the internet. You can also call into your bank for the account history by telephone.

That doens't mean that we don't miss receipts. Sometimes we don't bring them home. If we don't, by balancing every week, we are able to catch the missing receipts before they add up to a whole lot of money.

Balancing your checking account is quite simple. Start by checking off every item in your register that has cleared the bank. Then go back and add in any items that the bank says you spent, but you didn't write down. This may be interest earned or bank fees.

Total up all of the checks and debits versus the deposits that you do not checked as cleared. This is the amount of money that you have floating around. It hasn't cleared yet, but it is already spent.

Subtract that amount from the ending balance in your register. This amount should equal the balance on your bank statement. If it doesn't check for math errors in your checkbook or the omittance of items.

Sometimes, it is impossible to reconcile your checkbook. This often happens when you let a large amount of time go by. Simply start over. Accept what the bank says your balance is and go from there. Balance your account more often, and it probably won't happen again.
